Melges World League, second day of “champagne sailing” in Villasimius. Tomorrow the Melges 20 finals, Nika in control. La Pericolosa is first among the Melges 32.
Villasimius (Italy), 28 August 2021 - Second day of regattas in Villasimius for the fourth act of Melges World League international circuit, promoted by Melges Europe and organized for the occasion by the LNI - Sezione di Villasimius in collaboration with Marina di Villasimius.
Once again, the conditions were spectacular, with wind well spread throughout the day, gusts above twenty knots and rough seas: the perfect mix to complete an exciting day of sailing, in which both fleets managed to put the seal on the maximum number of daily races foreseen by the regulation.
The first to get to the water were the Melges 20 who, with the races completed today, bring the total of the series to five races completed and are preparing to conclude their championship tomorrow, when they will go into the water at 10.00 to determine the winner of Sardinia Rally.
Meanwhile, today's challenging and very tactical regattas have brought important changes in the general ranking, where the new leader responds to the name of Nika by Vladimir Prosikhin, followed with only one point of delay by Russian Bogatyrs by Igor Rytov. The ranking is very short, with Fremito d’Arja, current leader of the seasonal ranking, chasing Nika and Russian Bogatyrs only one point behind. Hubex of Kiril Frolov is fourth, while Matteo Marenghi Vaselli’s Raya slips to fifth position, weighed down by the two ninth places scored today.
The balance is also changing in the Corinthian division, where Neodent continues to set the pace, but is now followed in the standings by Kindako by Stefano Visintin and TeamBianca by Bianca Limonta and Davide Castelli.
The day of the Melges 32 was also exciting and demanding: the crews got to the race course at 13.00 to complete the first three races of the series that anticipates the World Championship. The fleet was pounding on the starting line, couldn’t wait to race and, after a couple of general recalls, completed the rest of the day's regattas with ease.
The leader after Day 1 is Christian Schowerer with La Pericolosa, former World Champion at Valencia 2019, followed with two lengths of delay by Mascalzione and Team Heat, an excellent third overall and first among the Corinthians.
Tomorrow the name of the winner of the Sardinia Rally will be revealed in the Melges 20 fleet, while for the Melges 32 it will be necessary to wait for the end of the regattas, scheduled for Monday.
The Race Committee will give the warning signal at 10.00 for the Melges 20 fleet, at 13.00 for the Melges 32 fleet.
