Melges 20 World Championship, a sparkling start in Cala Galera
Cala Galera (GR), 7 October 2020 - The Melges 20 World Championship begins in spectacular conditions: for the 2020 edition, the Melges 20 World Competition has found hospitality in the waters of Cala Galera, a location much appreciated by the Melges fleets, which last time hosted the Melges 32 for the 2017 edition of their Worlds.
Day 1 of racing immediately challenges the crews with demanding conditions, characterized by a crossed sea with steep waves and gradually increasing wind, up to exceeding the limits imposed by the Class regulations.
The reigning European Champion, Filippo Pacinotti's Brontolo Racing, was the one who read today's conditions in the best possible way: the tactical choices of Manuel Weiller, after an intense duel with Igor Rytov's Russian Bogatyrs, led Pacinotti's crew to cross the finish line in first position, followed by Rytov and Dario Levi's Fremito d'Arja.
At the end of the first race, held in gusty wind conditions of 20 knots and gradually increasing, the Race Committee has ordered the suspension of the regattas for today. The tests will resume tomorrow, Thursday 8 October, at 12.00.
