IN THE STRONG WIND OF VILLASIMIUS RUSSIAN BOGATYRS TAKES CONTROL OF THE RANKING
Villasimius (Cagliari), 27 April 2019 - Great day of sailing today on the race course of Villasimius, where the first European leg of the Melges 20 World League is taking place. Strong breeze, once again from the SW and with gusts up to 25 knots, allowed the fleet two complete two more races.
In such conditions of breeze and sea, crew experience is not a minor detail: the boat that could best interpret and benefit from the heavy conditions of today was Igor Rytov’s Russian Bogatyrs, one of the veterans (and among the most successful teams) of the Melges 20 Class. The Russian sailors immediately set the pace of the day, finding themselves perfectly at ease in today's challenging conditions, scoring a second and a first place in the two races completed.
With these partial scores (which add up to 4-7-2 of yesterday) Russian Bogatyrs, now at 16 points, gains an important margin over the group of pursuers led by the compatriot Pirogovo Sailing by Alexandr Ezhkov (11-4) who follows with 11 points of delay, and with a single point of advantage over the duo composed by Fremito d'Arja by Dario Levi (11-4) and by an increasingly convincing Boogie by the young Pierluigi Giannattasio (6-5). Alessandro Rombelli's reigning World Champion Stig (14-6) completes the provisional top five.
With these results, Igor Rytov really seems to have shortened the distance to another success in the Melges 20 World League, but tomorrow, last day of racing, Russian Bogatyrs will have to keep up the good work to defend himself from many top teams on the race course.
Tomorrow, with conditions that are expected to be similar to those of today, some more exciting sailing is awaited on the race course of Villasimius.
Meanwhile, the Corinthian division is led by Marco Giannini's Siderval (4-14 today), 7th in the general ranking.
