Villasimius (Cagliari), 27 April 2019 - Great day of sailing today on the race course of Villasimius, where the first European leg of the Melges 20 World League is taking place. Strong breeze, once again from the SW and with gusts up to 25 knots, allowed the fleet two complete two more races.
Villasimius (Cagliari), 25 April 2019 - After the seasonal debut of the Melges 32 fleet, Italy and Villasimius will be again the hosts of the inaugural act of the European division of the 2019 Melges 20 World League.
Alessandro Rombelli and the Italian STIG team of Francesco Bruni, Giorgio Tortarolo, and Tea Faoro are the winners of the 2019 Melges 20 World Championship hosted by the Coconut Grove Sailing Club in Miami, Florida. Rhonda Joyce and the GRINNING STREAK team of Jeremy Edwards and Tony Bowman earn the Corinthian World Championship title.
There is no doubt that the story of the day today at the Melges 20 World Championship is the ultra-tight racing that is ever-present in the fleet. Three days of racing are complete, and each day has resulted in a different leader.
The Melges 20 fleet is five races and three socials into the Melges 20 World Championship. Consistent racing has been paying off for Robert Hughes’s Heartbreaker who leads the pack at the halfway point, along with Manu Weiller and Federico Michetti.
Like steeds in their stalls, a strong contingent Melges 20s are in the water on Biscayne Bay. It’s the eve of the Melges 20 World Championship. The sailors are rested. The boats are measured. The race committee is ready. All of the final preparations have been made. All that is left to do is present our boats to mother nature over the course of the following four days.
The racing was tight with five different race winners over the event’s six races. The podium was wide open until the final race. In the end, Vladimir Prosikhin's NIKA finished first, Igor Rytov's RUSSIAN BOGATYRS second, and Daniel Thielman’s KUAI completed the podium. Melges 20 Worlds in Miami is next!
